Federal Controller of works, Edo State and the Director of Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Edo State, appears before the Edo State House of Assembly



At the plenary on Wednesday 26th November 2020, the federal controller of works, Edo state and the Director of federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Edo State, appeared before the floor of the house.


You we recall that on the 17th November 2020, the house summoned the controller general Edo state federal ministry of works, FERMA and NEMA after a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Leader of the house, Hon. Henry Okhuarobo over the deplorable conditions of the federal road in the state.


Interrogating the controller general of federal ministry of works Edo state,  the Hon member Representing Akoko Edo II Hon Emmanuel Agbaje asked if the ministry have a road inspectorate division who should always look into the issue of flooding. He also asked why the ministry have carried out palliative on the Delta axis of the Benin Warri road where as the Edo axis is left out. He stated further that Edo state as a hub that connects other state across the nation is now vulnerable in terms of security issues due to the deplorable conditions of the road.


Responding to the question on flooding of the road, the controller general of Edo state federal ministry of works said after due investigation and research, it was discovered that the flooding is caused by the people who blocked drainages and raised structures on water ways. He however call on the honorable members to help educate their constituents on the adverse effects on blocking drainages and building on water ways.


In their separate contributions the honorable members representing Orionmhon east and esan south east constituencies, said that there is needs for the house to go practical with the concerned agencies to go on the spot assessment of the affected areas especially areas where the agencies are having issues with the communities. The later how ever asked the director of FERMA if the agency have a unit that is purely charged with monitoring tonnage of vehicles that plies the federal roads.


In his response the speaker of the house Rt. Honorable Marcus Onobun expressed great displeasure over the deplorable conditions of the federal roads, stressing that the roads have become death traps and criminal hideout as the essence of representing the people is to speak on their behalf in times like this. He therefore directed the clerk of the house to liaise with the agencies concerned to fix an appropriate date for on the spot assessment of the bad spot of the federal roads.
